Tallinn Black Nights 2.0: Reinventing the Festival’s DNA
The film industry has most likely never changed as much in such a short time as it did during the last 3-4 months. Unaware of what awaits us in the months ahead, Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival is pushing forward with preparations for its 24th edition, set to take place from the 13th until the 29th of November.
The festival is preparing for several possible scenarios, getting ready to expand many of the festival's physical activities online to enhance the geographical reach and make it possible for industry professionals and foreign press with possible travel restrictions to still attend the events and see the films and projects. „We will see a fundamental change taking place this year, “ says Tiina Lokk, the head and founder of Black Nights, „as some of the changes that are being prepared will actually rewire the festival’s DNA, making it more digital, networked and ubiquitous and inclusive than ever before. We might as well call it Black Nights 2.0,“ she added with glee.
The plan includes building online screening capabilities that cater to the festival’s needs in terms of screening public and closed screenings, conferences and other content to both the regular audience, industry and international press. Additionally, it will include an extensive online industry platform that includes a market place, virtual meeting and pitching rooms and year-around project market to connect projects at all stages of their cycle with respective parties of interest – financiers, producers, distributors etc.
During the last edition of the Haapsalu Horror and Fantasy Film Festival that was organised 100% virtually due to the pandemic. The Black Nights team got to experiment organising a remote panel with participants from 6 different time zones. Watch it here!
Another important aspect will be the year-around promotion of Estonia as a location for production and recruiting talent, including the introduction of locations of interest, a database of the country’s professionals and the services they provide, and of course, the content they have produced. This is definitely something that later will see a geographical expansion to include other countries in the region (Latvia, Lithuania, Finland etc). PÖFF has two committed partners, Estonia’s first two regional film funds two help: the Viru Film Fund and the Tartu Film Fund who will be in charge of keeping the locations and talent pools up to date.
The third element is education, that will see the launch of PÖFF Academy, based on the framework that has been laid by the festival’s platform Creative Gate. The academy will have three main target audiences – international and local industry professionals; students of vocational school and universities; school students – aiming to provide high-quality audio-visual education with the partners at the Estonian Film Institute, the Baltic Film, Media, Art and Communication School and the Pallas University of Applied Sciences.
The Black Nights universe is looking for new films
Tallinn Black Nights that will return alongside its two sub-festivals – the Youth and Children's Film Festival Just Film and International Short Film and Animation Festival PÖFF Shorts – for the 24th edition this November. Each of the three has diverse programmes complete both in terms of the programming and events for the target audiences and industry.
Just Film has become one of the most recognized youth’s and children’s festival in Northern Europe, screening ~55 feature-length films and animations and holding an international competition for youth films while also presenting a candidate for the annual European Children’s Film Association Award. As a new initiative Just Film also presents a Works In Progress section for youth and children films in the Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event framework. There Is currently a summer sale taking place for Just Film submissions in FilmFreeway.
Loaded with the explosive creative energy that’s characteristic to filmmakers who work with the short and animated formats, PÖFF Shorts is exactly as wittily playful as their ironic slogan: Make Films Short Again! Combining the international short and animation community under an Academy-qualifying umbrella, it is the place where you can kickstart your career with your short film / animation that’s waiting to be discovered!
The Black Nights team feels that greater collective (and global) action is required in the world. All of the ticket revenue of the Black Nights’ side-festival, the Haapsalu Horror and Fantasy Festival were donated for the Estonian Food Bank for Corona relief, while, as a new endeavour, the festival will be directing a part of the revenue from the submission fees to fight climate change and deforestation. An Estonian startup called Local Offset will help Black Nights to find the best way to make a contribution to the world's forests, as a combination of carbon offseting and planting new trees.

Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event welcomes guests in offline and online!
- One of the most important film industry events in North-East Europe welcomes guests in Tallinn November 23-27
- Submissions are open for Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event
Spring 2020 has raised new challenges to film industry professionals as well as film festival organisers. Now, in early summer, everyone is actively looking for ways to rearrange their plans that were interfered earlier. The same applies to Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event that has continued with preparations to host one of the most important film industry events in North-Eastern Europe at the end of November.
Marge Liiske, Head of Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event, acknowledges that film world has been tossed upside down and now everyone is eager to find new ways to continue with their businesses and projects. “Most of the festivals and events have been cancelled or postponed or taken place in a very different arrangement due to circumstances. But I get a lot from my colleagues and partners that we all would appreciate the chance to see each other face-to-face instead of long video conferences and phone calls.” Liiske comments that Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event is welcoming all the industry to join the summit in the capital of Estonia in 23-27 of November, and is ready to host even more guests in Tallinn as before if all the COVID-situation is settling down of course. “We have formed several new exciting partnerships, notably with the EFP concerning the Producers on the Move, AGICI and MIBAC for Italian producers - we would really be happy to see everyone in Tallinn!”
At the same time, online services will be offered, parallel to the physical events. “As we have several months until the event, it allows us to set up the best combination of an online and offline programme together with the Black Nights Film Festival, so people could join our summit also via online-channels. Extensive online industry platform we plan to set up includes marketplace, webinars, virtual meeting and pitching rooms and a year-around project market to connect projects at all stages of the cycle with respective parties of interest – financiers, producers, distributors,” she added.
Send in your submissions!
As mentioned, the preparations for Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event have continued throughout the spring. In April the call for projects was announced for European Genre Forum, a training programme carried out together with Fantastic Zagreb Film Festival and film consultancy company Screen Division from Sitges. In early May the team of Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event, Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and Haapsalu Fantastic Film Festival (HOFF) set up a remote interactive industry panel “Fight or Frigth – Opportunities For The Genre Industry” to tackle the major challenges for the industry. Experts from six different time zones shared their thoughts about how the lockdown has affected the industry and what are the ways to go ahead.
“Fight or Frigth – Opportunities For The Genre Industry” - a virtual panel discussion joined together experts from all around the world
As the projects for European Genre Forum are already selected, other calls for projects have been announced. Since mid-June international script competition for film, TV and drama series scripts ScriptPool Tallinn and Powr Baltic Stories Exchange targeted to Nordic and Baltic scriptwriters are waiting for submissions. Also, Co-Production Market, held at Baltic Event since 2005, as the meeting-place for feature films in development looking for co-producers, financiers and sales agents is waiting for projects until September. Last year 74 projects were presented during Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event. Find out more about the
submissions here.
Get valuable insights and share ideas
Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event is not only about finding the partners for production but also has had a strong emphasis on new knowledge and sharing ideas, discussing trends and visions for the future. This year the summit hopes to dig deep into several hot topics such as new European digital film distribution and exhibition value chain, remote productions and practices and the role of festivals and markets (after CoVID). Also, the trends of digital content consumption and out of the box solutions for European producers to adapt during the changing times as optional topics for the organisers.
Sharing ideas has always been highly appreciated at Indusry@Tallinn & Baltic Event
2020 will also see the launch of PÖFF Academy, based on the framework introduced by the festival’s platform Creative Gate - a creative industry development programme with several sub-programs tackling different areas of film-related businesses, like Music Meets Film, Black Nights Stars, EFA Masterclasses on production, costume design, makeup and hair departments, BlackWalk for young costume designers, and Still Meets Film for set photograph. Last year Creative Gate introduced several internationally acclaimed speakers including BAFTA Award-winning English musician and composer Richard Harvey and Emmy Award Nominated Casting Director Nancy Bishop.
Two years ago, TV Beat Forum was welcomed as part of the Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event The forum reacts to the real demand of the industry as a drama series’ market takes over and the need, for content by global streaming platforms increases. The programme of this year’s event will be announced in August, but we can say that it will cover the market overview of the past few years, and look into financing and production options in the Baltics. In addition, more global topics will be discussed such as gender equality and cultural diversity in stories and in real life and global financing models in post-corona world.
